Hey, guys! I'm trying out a new one shot, so let me know if you like it! "I know, Mom. I'll be home soon. I just got off, ok?" 17-year-old Kate Baker sighed into her iPhone as she stepped onto the elevator in the Disney studios. She was leaving work early so she could go watch her little sister while her mom went to God-knows-where till three a.m. The teen breathed a sigh of relief to see the fairly large elevator was empty. The silver doors slid quietly closed behind her as she hit the button for the parking garage. Her relief, however, was short-lived when she stopped only two floors down, the doors gliding open to reveal a single person. The tall, curly-haired boy that stepped inside was too occupied reading a stack of papers to notice Kate's sigh of disgust. He absent-mindedly pushed the Lobby button with one hand as the other held tightly to the packet. Kate held her breath as the doors shut once again, hoping he wouldn't say a word as he quickly checked his reflection out before returning to his reading. The elevator was just three floors away from getting rid of the guy when it jerked to a halt. This time, however, the doors did not split. This time, the lights shut off. This time, there was pure silence. "Oh my God, please no," Kate whispered, clutching her bag. "This can't be happening." "Hello? Who is that?" The voice came from her left, and she turned towards it. "I'm Kate," she said shakily. "Kate Baker." "Hi, Kate. I'm Nick," the voice told her, sounding like it was trying very hard to fight panic. "Nick Jonas." "Yeah, I know," she mumbled. "What was that?" he questioned. Kate was pretty sure she heard him smiling. "Nothing," the girl said quickly. "Nick, how are we going to get out of here?" "Here, let me find the emergency button. Do you have a cell phone or anything?" "Yeah, here," she offered, holding out her iPhone. His hand searched the blank space until it brushed hers in the dark. Jumping away from his touch, Kate dropped the phone to the floor, and she cursed under her breath. "I'm sorry!" she exclaimed, dropping down to her knees to search for it. "Hang on, I'll find it." In the pitch black, she could hear him feeling the floor for it, too. Once again, their hands collided, but this time he didn't let go as quickly "Kate, why are you shaking? Are you ok?" "I'm fine," she insisted, trying to keep the raw fear out of her voice. "I just need to find the phone." "I got it," he sighed, relieved. A dim glow laminated his face, and Kate found herself unable to pull her gaze away. Nick quickly found the emergency button and pressed hard on it. A crackly voice came from the speaker on the wall. "L.A. fire department," the voice said. "We've been alerted already, and there are men on their way. Do you have a form of light?" "Yeah, just a cell-" Nick's voice cut off as the cell phone died in his hand. "Shit." "Everything alright?" the man asked. "Yeah, the phone just died. And with it our source of light," he told the man. "How long till we can get some lights in here?" "That's still undetermined. Our men have only just left, so it could be just a few minutes or maybe a couple hours." Nick heard Kate gasp and ran a hand through his famous brown curls. "Ok, well what can you tell us?" "The elevator that you are currently in is stuck between the third and fourth floors, however we don't know how far between or how accessible you are." Silence, then quiet sobs. The famous teen racked his brain for something to make this seem better, even by a small amount. "Well, alright," he finally said. "Please keep us posted. Not like we're going anywhere." "Of course." The crackling died off, leaving an eerie quiet in the darkness. "Kate?" Nick said softly. The only sound he could here was deep breathing as she tried to compose herself. Moving smoothly, he repositioned himself so that he was sitting beside her. His hand rested right beside hers, but when they touched slightly, she pulled hers away quickly. You've got to be kidding me, he thought. Stuck on an elevator with the one girl that's going to resist me. LA sucks! He didn't know what to say, so he let her cry quietly for a few minutes before he finally tried putting a hand on her shoulder. Kate jumped slightly, but didn't move away this time. Relieved, Nick let his thumb move in small circles across her smooth skin. "Hey, what's wrong?" There was a moment of silence before her wobbly voice replied, "I'm afraid of the dark."
